Lionel Sherratt was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada to Leonard and Dora Sherratt, June 10, 1935.
In 1938 he was able to visit his parents birth place in Audley, Staffordshire and visit with his grandparents. He and his family returned to Canada in 1939. He spent his entire life in Kirkland Lake, educated at Central Public School and graduating from KLCVI high school. He kept busy with many sports activities including basketball, curling, baseball and was the Captain of the football team.
Lionel spent a year at Queens University in Toronto before heading to Michigan School of Technology and Mining where he graduated with a science degree in civil engineering.
He was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers in Ontario, the MCMT Alumni Association and the Chi-Epsilon civil engineering honorary society.
Lionel also worked at the Sylvanite Mines in Kirkland Lake as a gold miner.
After university Lionel returned to Kirkland Lake as project engineer in 1959 and became the Municipal Engineer on November 15, 1962.
Lionel later assumed the responsibilities of CEO for the Town of Kirkland Lake as well as Town Engineer serving under several Mayors and councils over the years. In addition Lionel was appointed to the Kirkland Lake Police Commission.
While Lionel had a huge responsibility to the Town of Kirkland Lake, he is most often remembered for his kindness and compassion. He was a dedicated family man who always made time for his wife and children. When the kids were growing up Lionel took the family on many vacations to the east coast.
In late July 1994, Lionel was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma, Kidney cancer. Six short weeks later, on September 13,1994, he passed away at home with his family around him.
In his honour the Lionel Sherratt Water Filtration Plant was named for the man who dedicated much of his life to the Town of Kirkland Lake. The Town of Kirkland Lake Employee Appreciation awards are also named in his honour.
