1851 census indicates John was widowed, living in Brown Edge with sons Abraham, Jacob, Daniel, Aaron and Sampson and daughter Charlotte. John was 49 and a collier.

The book "A Brown Edge History" indicates they lived at a "smallholding east of the vale" beside Ash Tree Farm.

St. Anne's burial records indicated John was buried April 15, 1861 at the age of 59.

Son Daniel was buried at St. Anne's, July 6, 1851 at the age of 18. Son Jacob buried at St. Anne's June 15, 1859, age 27 and son Sampson, September 12, 1868. Records indicate all of the sons were colliers.
