Surname Variations: Sherard, Sherrart, Sherrat, Shirrard, Sherrat, Sherritt, Sherat, Skerett.
The family name "Sherratt" is said to have been descended from the Saxons of England. Originally on the south east coast.
The first recorded name of "Sherratt" appears in Cheshire before 1066. By the 15th century they had branched to Staffordshire.
Sherratts migrated to North America in the 18th century.
From this line son Thomas Sherratt is born in 1748 in Norton in the Moors. He and wife, Ann Malkin, have son John Sherratt in 1779 in Brown Edge.
It is Brown Edge and Norton in the Moors, where most of my ancestors began and where I have concentrated my efforts of research. In 1841 there were four Sherratt families living in Brown Edge,by 1851 six families and by 1861, ten Sherratt families.
In 1871 the family line began to branch out to Fenton, Burslem, Chesterton and Badderley Edge. It is my direct line that moved to Chesterton and started family in Talke Pits.
Much of my research shifts to Talke Pits as my grandfather was born there in 1905. It is my grandfather who immigrated to Canada in 1927 along with two brothers who brought the family name to Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.
The main occupation of the Sherratt men from 1841 to the 1900s is coal mining. There are some Sherratts in the line who worked in the pottery industry.
I keep all copies of Sherratt records I find in hopes that down the road, all the Sherratt names will connect to the line.
If you have looked over the Surname Index and have not found your Sherratt, please feel free to Contact me. I do not have all the unconnected Sherratts listed on the site but may have records of your Sherratts.
I am always happy to hear from any Sherratt researching the name, along with surnames attached to the Sherratt line.
